Treatment of Eating Disorders (EDD) in Fuengirola
What is an Eating Disorder?
Eating disorders (EDs) are serious disturbances in the relationship with food, body and emotions. It is not simply a matter of eating too much or too little, but a deep conflict that affects the physical and mental health of the person.
At CALMA Psicólogos, we approach these disorders from a close, professional and respectful approach, helping our patients to regain balance and connection with their body.
Most common types of ATT
Anorexia nervosa
Extreme restriction of food intake, intense fear of weight gain and distorted perception of the body. Can lead to severe malnutrition and serious physical complications.
Bulimia nervosa
Episodes of binge eating followed by compensatory behaviours such as vomiting, excessive exercise or laxative use. Often kept secret for years.
Binge eating disorder
Binge eating of large amounts of food without compensatory behaviours. Often leads to great emotional distress and guilt.
ARFID (avoidance/restriction of intake disorder)
It is not related to weight or body image. The person avoids certain foods because of their texture, smell or fear of choking. Can lead to significant nutritional deficits.
Other specified or unspecified ACTs
Disordered eating behaviours that do not fit into the above categories, but also affect the well-being of the sufferer.
How do I know if I am developing an ATT?
Some warning signs:
-
Avoiding social meals
-
Lying about what you have eaten
-
Excessive preoccupation with weight, body or exercise
-
Mood swings, anxiety or isolation
-
Constantly measuring, weighing or comparing oneself
If you detect these symptoms in yourself or someone close to you, it is important to seek help as soon as possible. Early diagnosis greatly improves the prognosis.
Causes and risk factors
EDs have multiple causes. Some factors that may influence their occurrence include:
-
Genetic predisposition and family history
-
Low self-esteem or perfectionism
-
Demanding or overprotective family environments
-
Traumatic experiences or bullying at school
-
Social pressure and exposure to ideal bodies on social networks
Each person is unique, but a combination of these factors can trigger the disorder.
Who is affected by ATTs?
Although more common in adolescent females, EDs can affect people of any age, gender or social status. Many cases in men, adults or older people go unnoticed due to stereotypes.
According to data from the Spanish Society of General Practitioners (2018), its prevalence in women aged 12-21 years ranges from 4.1% to 6.4%. In men, it is 0.31 PT3GTT. Furthermore, the WHO identifies EDs as one of the leading causes of mental illness in adolescent girls worldwide.
